In the United States, it is illegal to own axolotls in California, Maine, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia.
Each state has its own set of laws and regulations governing the ownership of exotic pets, and these four regions have deemed axolotls illegal due to various ecological concerns.
In Canada, axolotls are illegal in New Brunswick, British Columbia, and Prince Edward Island. A special permit is required to own them in Nova Scotia.
In Manitoba, axolotls are illegal in Winnipeg, but legal in the rest of the province.
These regulations are in place to protect both the axolotls and the local ecosystems.
Care & Husbandy Requirements
Axolotls are famous for their remarkable regenerative abilities and their perpetual state of larval form, a phenomenon known as neoteny.
These “giant babies” can grow quite large in size, while still looking the same as when they were hatchlings.
Axolotls are relatively low-maintenance pets. They thrive in a freshwater aquarium with a temperature around 15-20°C (59-68°F). They eat a diet of brine shrimp, bloodworms, and special axolotl pellets.
With proper care, axolotls can live up to 15 years, providing long-term companionship.
Axolotl Diet
Axolotls are carnivorous and enjoy a diet of both live and dry food.
They comfortably eat live food such as earthworms, mosquitoes, crickets, and crustaceans. They also eat dry food such as dried shrimp.
Since they swallow food without chewing, you need to feed them at least twice a week.
Axolotl Enclosure
The minimum tank size for an axolotl is 15-20 gallons. Add 10 gallons per axolotl if you plan to keep more than one together.
Ground space is more important than depth. Your axolotl will spend most of its time “walking” on the bottom and won’t need a lot of room to swim around.
Water depth should be at least the same as the length of your axolotl.
Enclosure Requirements
- Water Temperature: Keep your axolotl tank temperature between 60-65°F.
- Water Quality: The water values in your tank are crucial for your axolotl’s health. An axolotl’s permeable skin leaves it vulnerable to infections. The most important values: pH – pH, or the acidity of water, needs to be between 6.5-8. Hardness – Water hardness, or the amount of dissolved mineral salts, should be between 100-200 ppm.
- Lighting: Axolotls don’t like bright light. Excess light may cause distress. The lighting is not beneficial to your axolotls. It is useful for you to help you see it. You can turn it off when not using it.
Remember, axolotls are not toys and should be handled minimally. Over-handling can cause them stress and potential harm.
They require a specific environment to thrive, including a properly cycled tank, the right water temperature.
